I have been teaching English at Woodsville High School for going on nine years. I teach mostly English 9, along with a few electives (including this one!).
So, how are you enjoying reading nonfiction? Is it what you expected? What do you like or dislike about it?

I love reading nonfiction books! the author are so creative at telling their stories that i have to keep reminding myself that im reading a true story. i love my book so far and i cant wait to see what else he throws my way. =] reading nonfiction seems to be more interesting because the author has to find creative ways to tell something that really happened. the author cant just write what they know the reader wants to hear, and that's the main reason i like nonfiction, its harder to make interesting. i have found from the few books we've read, authors do a great job at making their own life interesting to me! =D
I must admit, the nonfiction course is turning out to be awfully different than I expected it to be like. I vaguely remember having bad memories with nonfiction book. But my guess is that I just grabbed the first nonfiction book I saw on the counter without considering if it would be good or not. If you're wondering, the book was "Roll of Thunder, Hear my Cry." Terrible book. On the other hand, we have things like Winterdance and the Glass Castle and Boy to tide us over in this class. In this class, I can freely enjoy and converse about any books that I really do like. And I get to spin in Mrs. Thurlow's chair, which is pretty cool to me.
Nonfiction books are something i actually look forward to reading. I like reading these kinds of books because they are real and the writing flows more creatively!
"Miracle in the Andes" was a GREAT book-probably the best book i've read yet! If you like survival books, its the book for you ;]
i feel exactly the same way as Peter! when mrs.thurlow told me it was a nonfiction class i was like "oh those are true right?" =D and then i hesitated about taking it. im really glad i did though. i have learned that not all nonfiction books are boring. i've loved most of the ones i've read, with the exception of my independent book. no longer do i think "oh boy" when i think about nonfiction its more of an excitement. when i look ato books i've actually been looking to see if it's nonfiction or not!
actually, my view on reading on fiction books and taking this class was something i was looking forward to doing. I don't know what it is about them, but reading books that are true just makes me hooked. I like how you can connect to them on a real basis.
i didn't think of nonfiction books being so like fiction books. They're very similar and i didn't realize. I tell my grandma every day that she should have written a book. She actually regrets not writing one because she has had a pretty interesting life. I should interview her and write one... like the book Color of Water.
I like to read nonfiction books because it lets me know what different authors go through and how there life changed from when they were young until they were now.
As I said, I like this elective. Not much has changed, 'cept for this new book we're reading. "We Beat The Street," is it? It's an okay book. I've already commented in my journals, but I'm really not a fan of how repetitive the book gets. Almost every second they use the words "never again" in conjunction, and it gets on my nerves.
i think i actually prefer fiction books over nonfiction books. They're a bit more exciting. They can be a bit stranger and non realistic but they can easily keep me from putting a book down. So far i've only really liked Glass Castle and i guess We Beat The Street isn't so bad either. Winterdance was too confusing to me, im from Jersey and i know nothing about winter survival or winter vocab or whatever you want to call it haha, i never learned any of that stuff so i was lost about 85% of the time.
